Algebra
Lecture #1
(c)2005

Rules
Called the Order of Operations

1. Multiply
2. Divide
3. Add
4. Subtract

Memorize the Acronym MDAS

A,B,C,D,n,x,y,z Etc. Are Letters Called Variables.

A Variable can be assigned a number by the (=) equals sign.

The Variable always appears on the left of the equals sign.

Ex.

A=5

Assigns the value 5 to the Variable A.

Problem #1

A=5
B=6
C is unassigned

What is the value of C if :

A + B = C

5 + 6 = C

11 = C

C = 11

What is the Value of C if :

B - A = C
6 - 5 = C
1 = C
C = 1

Order of Operations
Part 2

Whenever Parenthesis "()" are involved use MDAS within the parenthesis first.
Ex. (MDAS)

Problem

A = 5
B = 6
C = 3

(A + B) x C = D

What does D Equal?

(A + B) x C = D

5 + 6 x 3 = D

11 x 3 = 33

33 = D

D = 33

Excercise 3

A = 5
B = 6
C = 3
D = ?

(A + C) = D
-------
B

(5 + 3) = D (MDAS)
-------
6

(8)
--- = D
6

4
- = D
