November 1998

I've been doing a lot of socializing and not a lot of work lately, but I feel driven to type tonight. It is very difficult to focus when you are thinking about all of the different people that you encounter during the holidays. I feel fortunate to think that I will have an opportunity to interact with a lot more people in just a few hours, and hopefully share with them some of the positives of my last few days.
Since I wrote for this page last, I have been to see Enemy of The State twice, and I have been out to several bars, the names of which aren't even important to the experience. I played darts while I was out and learned a few more of the rules of Cricket. I never realized how the point system worked until this past Friday.
I spent an interesting Thanksgiving with my family and enjoyed the food and fun. I learned that my sister is becoming more independent all the time. According to my uncle, my grandmother is doing well. It was unfortunate that she could not make it to dinner this year. I have to begin making more time to see her.
Tonight a friend of mine from out of town came in to visit. Jodi, Scott's girlfriend, updated me on the situation in Rochester. It looks like school is putting a lot of pressure on everyone this year. I am relieved to hear that I am not the only fighter in the struggle against the man. I had a hamburger with her at Perkins and we smoked and talked about the price of Tobacco and a few other subjects of interest including the Summit Park Mall Incedent of 1996, which few people know of.
My Dad is on his way to work right now, I went downstairs briefly to get a cup of coffee and wish him a good day. I have been trying to get into the habit of doing that when I am up in the early morning. Hopefully it will contribute to his sense of my presence here in the household. I despise the idea that he has been waking up at 4AM alone for the past 5 years and had no one to keep him company.
Since I have a couple of other things to attend to this morning, unfortunately this message has to be brief. I am glad that everyone is still keeping in touch, and I hope that everyone finishes 1998 nicely. It definitely hasn't been an easy year, but it hasn't been altogether unpleasant.
Best wishes,

I've been to see two movies this weekend, even though I had expected to get a lot of studying done. I probably shouldn't be adding to this page now, except for the fact that I am a little bit excited about something. A couple of people from campus actually sent me some direct electronic mail this week and I was excited about it. The electronic mail from these two people meant that people are beginning to notice that I am actually around on campus and not just another number. I really appreciate that and I am glad that I have received it. The two people that wrote directly to me were both people who are deserving of respect for their interests in the promotion of positive events and happenings on campus and I am glad to be considered an important part of their network. For once I have managed to run into a couple of people at UB who aren't chronic about all of the wrong things. I think that I am beginning to get a little bit of my original high school edge back.
I even got a letter from Chuck Shumer the other day thanking me for my participation in his campaign, as did a couple of the other people that were directly involved in attending his events and putting up his signs. Granted a letter is just a letter, but hey, I don't see Pataki or Ross Perot doing anything for me for the times that I squawked about them during the 1996 campaign. Yes, I am one of those political turncoats you hear about all of the time, and now I have reason to be proud of it. The Democrats made history this year by 5 winning seats in the House of Representatives. One of the House Seats we kept has been held by John LaFalce who I helped make some phone calls for back in the beginning of October. And another Democrat that I met at a meeting of Democrats won his City Council seat this year. His name was Charles Walker.
I am glad to have actually participated this year. I picked up my first issue of Time magazine at Barnes and Noble the other day, and I was actually surprised to find that if you know a little bit about what is going on, a lot of it is actually funny. They had a hilarious headline called Body Slam in the magazine for an article of Jesse The Body Ventura who won the Minnesota Governor's seat this year. My friend Mike, who is in a couple of my classes could probably tell you a little bit more about him if you asked, but I think Time probably is doing a pretty good job this month too.
One of the other political things that I did this month was attend the NYSSA conference for the UB Political Science club. I may have already mentioned it lower on this page or on a previous page. I have written a long report about the experience that I submitted via electronic mail and via Mike to the club (I wasn't feeling well this past Wednesday). I am also going to place it on-line here because I think that it might be funny to some of you who read this page. A girl in class commented about my Michael Jackson line and thought that it was pretty funny, so if you are looking to see what I did on Haloween this year in an unabridged form, just click on the link above that says NYSSA conference and you can see what I have been up to.
Christmas season is on the way, and I realized last night when I was in Barnes and Noble that I had better start getting my Christmas list together and keeping my eyes peeled for potential gifts. It looks like a lot of people are going to get candy bars in their stockings from me because I am not very good at sales anymore and I think that I may have to buy a lot of them from the political science club. Who knows though. Maybe I will get a sudden surge of charisma and manage to hawk them all off. I strongly doubt it. While Candy Bars are usually pretty easy to sell, as far as items to sell are concerned, I know one thing after a few years of experience with people. Nobody likes a salesman.
Anyway, it looks like it is getting late, and I'm beginning to have a nicotene fit, and my fingers are starting to get a little bit sore after writing return e-mails and composing this page, so, have a great week everybody, I hope to be talking with you soon, preferably, in person.
Buy some candy, Damn it!

Well, another month has gone by. Time starts passing really fast when you have exams and papers due and you don't have enough time to think in between them. I thought I was finished with my concerns for a short period today, after taking an I have been studying all week for. It turns out, that I was wrong. I have a Latin Quiz tomorrow that I have to cram for tonight if I want to maintain my B average. This semester has given me white line fever. All of the driving back and forth to the campus makes me really tired, and there are days when I come home after class and just crash until dinner, or sometimes even later.
Anyway, I think I am getting more done with my time than I have been in the past. I managed to squeak out of my responsibilities and grab a cup of coffee tonight at Stimulance with my friends Pat and Ryan. Stimulance now has a special ventilated smoking section so if you smoke, you can actually enjoy yourself without freezing to death. I think I will probably find myself visitng the place a couple more times this winter if I am still smoking once it gets cold.
I did a couple of things over the past couple of weeks that have been interesting. I spent my Haloween in Utica New York at a New York State Student Assembly gathering at the Radisson Hotel. It was pretty interesting and I met a couple of cool people. Keeping in touch with them is probably going to be difficult since I have no reason to go travelling to a dozen different schools during the semester, but I have some e-mail addresses and I enjoyed meeting a wide range of students.
During October, as most of you already know, I got my nifty Kodak DVC digital camera. Every once in a while I shoot some photos. Here's one interesting one that I shot while Pat was driving down the highway. It came out pretty clear considering it was a moving photo. Seeing this guy ride a motorcycle made me want to buy a motorcycle. The only thing that deters me from buying one is the danger involved in riding among cars that are much heavier and well designed for impact.
One other thing about school that I was excited about last week was a test I got back. Actually two tests. I received an A on an Ethics essay test, and an A on a multiple guess Political Science test. I was glad to see that I was doing well. So glad in fact that I had a couple of 2 hour berserk streaks where I went wild and bought Starbucks coffee, and Chinese food for lunch. I didn't really need to buy these unneccessaries on campus where they are ridiculously expensive, but I like to reward myself when I do well.
I had a nice talk with a girl on Haloween too. She called our conversation at a party something of a date. I don't think that she really realized how nice of a comment that actually was. It's been a long time since I've been complemented. However, she seems to have grown up in a world drastically different than mine, and I don't know how I could even begin to relate to her what it's like on my small part of this planet. But who knows... People can only change as time goes on. I just hope that nothing changes her world for the worse. It sounds like she has been doing pretty good. The last thing I would like to see is for anyone to have to have some of the experiences that I've had. I think that sometimes I take things too seriously. It isn't often that you get to have a good conversation with someone you don't really know though.
I've lost a few more bucks at the Casino. Fortunately my luck this month hasn't been anything like it was last summer, and I have kept a reasonable amount in the bank this year. I don't plan to go back into that place again for an extended period of time. I have some other more pressing concerns.
Christmas shopping season is coming up fast. I usually try to do some early shopping in order to avoid the crowds. It is going to take some thinking this year to find some things that my family would like. I already have a couple of things on my list and I am hoping to come up with a few more before too much more time passes. I hope that I will not have to wait until the end of December to start shopping. I usually start to get really edgy then if I don't already have my presents picked out. Last year I was in Walmart on Christmas Eve to pick up some wrapping paper and the faces of desperation were all there. I hate looking at people who are driven to spend their money on the last night before Christmas, because it really drives home the fact that we are a viciously consumerized nation. I much prefer having my affairs settled far in advance, and I like to make sure that the gifts that I give are chosen carefully and not in haste.
So that's it then. Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and Christmas is soon to follow. And then New Years Eve. I guess that means that I will have been actively working on this page for over a year. I can say that for the first time in my life I have kept a journal, and kept it for more than a couple of days. Better yet, it's on the web, and I have a few readers who are always reminding me to keep them posted. Pat, Vin, Mike, Ryan, and Shennen, thanks for keeping me interested. For all of you that check this page on a not so regular basis, thanks for reading. Hopefully I can keep you interested enough to write for it someday.
Happy Turkey Day!!!
